(The plural of Penny is.. *Pennies*) I have something similar. Also Machined and coated with a magnetic plating. It does this.. You move the pen away quickly and it leaves the Dime that was underneath the shell.
Looks like spy stuff! You can hide a piece of microfilm in there and pass it off to your handler. I read to many spy novels!!
