kids interest in coin collecting

We have 5 children at home, ranging from 18 years to 18 months old. Every birthday and Xmas, each child receives coins and bullion of some type. Coinage, and all the history that goes with it, is a fairly constant discussion in our house. All of our children have shown an interest, and I suspect they will all be collectors of some degree. Our 18 month old is obsessed with coins. He has several piggybanks full of 40% Kennedys that he loves to play with. We figure that at the very least, we are promoting a deeper knowledge of money, and with it hopefully respect .

 

Ya the new cents are terrible.

 

The design isnt really good on the new cents.

 

It's a great hobby. It is very educational ands some of the greatest people are coin collectors.

I'm 13, I started to get interested when I was 5 when I found a 1940's nickel in my pocket change!

 

I love this topic, Kevin J Flynn approached me with an idea that we have just started to make happen.

Kevin wrote a book geared towards helping get kids interested in numismatics, Kyle Vick published the book and sent me several cases, I'm distributing the books to every coin club. The coin clubs will receive the books for free, we (Kevin Flynn, Kyle Vick and CoinZip) are picking up the tab.

My 11 year old likes silver dimes. He seems to like them both from a numismatic approach (filling a folder) & a bullion approach (he keeps up with their melt value). There is a bullion shop that lets us search their tray of junk silver and that is how he gets most of his coins. I also give each of my kids some kind of coin that relates to their interests each Christmas. They do like to fight about who will get my coins when I die...
