Picked this 1854 Huge O Quarter up from a guy yesterday. He had this in a ziplock bag with some other coins and wanted me to purchase them. So i threw him out an offer and he excepted it. My question is what do you think it would grade at? Im thinking a VF 25 but would like to have your input. Thanks
I was leaning toward lower as well, F15-VF20 (and cleaned) seems to be in the right ballpark. Still, a nice pick up!
Thanks for your input! These coins seem to have a decent price. Do you think I should have her slabbed?
F15. Because the background is so dark, I assume it must be much brighter than it appears, and therefore assume it is cleaned as well.
Those are much better photos Cazador, not cleaned. Are you sure? Why so low? There seems to be much better details especially with the dentils. That eagle screams 25. The shield and Liberty are also strong. Except that is todays gradeflation standards.
I agree with low VF or F15 worst case. Is it a light enough cleaning to be market acceptable for NGC/PCGS? Maybe they’d just knock it down a point?
Thank you. What would be the purpose? You are asking persons to advise you based on a photographic image. The assumption is the piece is what you believe it to be, and expect this to be the basis of the advice from others that will assist you in reaching a decision. I would suggest you make certain that it is what you think, by research, and not a tooled/enhanced piece. Otherwise, the TPG may disappoint you. Yes, I understand the value of the piece if it is as you believe it to be. Me? Based on the image only, I have doubts it is not enhanced by the Doctors. There was a well known Doc in the Midwest that "created" this particular coin. The chances that a person happens to have a genuine piece, and it has not been certified by a reputable TPG after all these years is...well.... to paraphrase a phrase from an excellent movie: "...the chances are slim to none, Martin....slim to none...". Truth in editing: added an "i" where needed, because of a bad key board 'move'.
BTW, I meant to mention that Mr. Young has written about this date/mintmark. Maybe you can PM him and ask for his advise. Years (many!) ago, I learned from a fellow named Guy Whidden. I learned a heck of a lot from him. That date/mintmark was what he would use as a comparison.
@Jack D. Young Might as well get his opinion. But to say that every collection and it's contents is known and has been seen by a dealer or a grading company is preposterous. PS not saying that I have the answers as to an altered coin.
I assume you see the group of scratches on the Obverse shield. I have seen a few coins in straight graded holders that have scratches but since these are right on the shield i would expect a details grade. I think most people are being to severe in their grading. Briggs says these coins are usually poorly struck and that the dies were crumbling. (Look at things like the letters on the reverse if you don't know what i mean. I think the coin makes the VF 20 grade as a 1854-O (Huge O). I would lean towards F-15 if it might be some other date. just my opinion. James P.S. Congrats on getting such a rare date.
