Shooting at the airport......you guys are alright? Surprised that nary a mention has been made. And Mods? If you feel this thread should be moved to the general section, then by all means do so........but I think this mention (by me) will attract more responses from the attendees.
Show started yesterday. Dealers ought to already be there, although visitors could have been arriving today. By my standards, the show is walking distance from the airport, less than 2 miles.
I know. The Convention Center is two miles as the crow flies from the terminal where the shooting happened.
I think this is the airport that is at the intersection of I-595 & I-95. Like Dave said, it's just a couple miles from the Convention Center. Chris
Nope! I'm driving over tomorrow, leaving at 5am. @Insider reported that dealers planning to leave today were stranded. Some incoming flights to Lauderdale were rerouted over here to Ft. Myers (RSW). Chris
The FAA needs to change the protocol for "checked weapons". It may help a little if ammunition was banned from accompanying the weapon, but who is to say that a co-conspirator couldn't bring additional ammunition to the arriving baggage area. Probably the safest method would be to deliver ALL weapons from the departure point to the nearest police facility. Chris
Baggage areas aren't behind security. He could've walked in off the street and done this. This thread is gonna get moved.
This may double post, looks like my first post may not work. I have not heard of any dealers or attendees that were injured. A few were at the airport and had to evacuate outside or hit the deck. Had to be very scary for them. It was announced over the loudspeakers, got quite very fast and we all know we don't listen to the announcements. The airport is still closed and has been since the shooting. For those attending tomorrow have some slack for the dealers as many flights have been cancelled. My guess is many will have to leave early if being re-routed to Miami (happened to some attendees today) or other ways home.
I'd be all for prohibiting that. It wouldn't be reasonable to expect departing dealers to be in danger from something that happened in the incoming baggage area; that's why I previously only commented on incoming show visitors.
From the FLL airport website, "All services are temporarily suspended at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Please contact your air carrier about your flight information." The Red Cross was set up in a nearby parking lot tonight, presumably setting up a staging area for families of victims or people that have been otherwise impacted by the shooting.
