Duchy of Benevento Gold Tremissis of Gisulf II (minted in the name of Justinian II in Benevento sometime between 742 and 751): This coin published in A. D'Andrea and C. Moretti, The Lombards' coins of Southern Italy (Edizioni D'Andrea, 2014).
Roman Empire Silver Antoninianus of Trebonianus Gallus (minted in Mediolanum sometime between 251 and 253):
Ptolemaic Province of Kyrenaika Gold Drachm of Ophellas (minted in Kyrene by the Magistrate Chairios sometime between 322 and 313 BCE):
Rather than Volusian, it looks like the legend reads in part TREB GALLVS or Trebonianus Gallus. Nice coin with eastern style!
https://www.biddr.com/auctions/astarte/browse?a=5636&l=6918188 Obverse: IMP C C VIB VOLVSIANVS AVG Reverse: MARTEM PROPVGNATOREM That is what it says according to the auction house.
I believe they are incorrect. It looks to be the type linked below for Trebonianus Gallus with the obverse legend IMP C C VIB TREB GALLVS P F AVG. A nice coin! https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=3645446
That's an attractive example! The reverse legend cited is correct. But... the obverse legend cited is incorrect. It's hard to read, but it seems your example's obverse is: IMP C C VIB TREB GALLVS P F AV This portion of the obverse is pretty clear:
If that is indeed the case, then I am going to consign the coin (since I also won this (https://www.biddr.com/auctions/galleria-auctions-tokyo/browse?a=5579&l=6838099) one), but I will wait and see what is actually delivered before deciding.
That’s a nice coin. I like the toning. Many coins have been cleaned to bright surfaces. I prefer them as found as long as nothing is obscured. It reminds me of this dirty Gordian. I wouldn’t clean it because as-found is rarer for these than bright and shinny! Here’s my nicest Volusian: …and here’s a Volusian with a bust similar to yours:
Thank you @philologus_1 ! Speaking of cleaning up coins… I believe I bought this one from you! I really liked it but thought I could improve it by attempting a bit of cleaning and some encrustation removal. I lost a bit of patina thickness with some distilled water but overall was able to keep most of it, and remove a good majority of the encrustations without going too far because there were some pits under the crust. I hope you like how it looks and are not bummed I cleaned it up a bit. I’ve been meaning to message you back with a thank you for the further coin background info! Previous: After some distilled water and mechanical cleaning:
Indeed I do specifically remember that coin. I loved the reverse detail in the galley and the standing emperor's apparel; (also the clear Cross on the banner). My original intent was to attempt exactly what you did, but after having put that project off for quite a while I finally decided to pass it on to someone else. I'm glad it went to you! Good job on the removal of a great majority of the encrustation on the obverse portrait's crown! That no doubt took a bushel of patience. Thanks for sharing the results!
