After years of having my coins in flips and acrylic holders I decided to commission these two displays out of mahogany. Now that they are done I could use some ideas or suggestions on what sort of trays to place inside them for displaying coins. They trays seen here are from Amazon, feel pretty cheap and are far far too red. One thing that is important (for me personally) is a way to hide the attribution cards and NFC chips behind each coin. Today I do this by simply stacking two trays on top of each other so I can use the bottom try for attribution material. I would love it if there are tray solutions out there that allow for a little trap door with this in mind so that I could access the cards/NFC without disturbing all coins in the tray. Most of my coins are Tetradrachm size or smaller (except for that Ptolemy monster here in the pics). The recessed dimensions of each display are 29" x 16.75" (73.5cm x 42.5cm) I'm fully prepared to have to cut the trays in some custom way so that they fit perfectly within the recessed dimensions of the display. Do any solutions come to mind or know of a resource where I can geek out over tray options, materials and sizes? After posting this on Reddit, I learned of Abafil and definitely looking into their trays. I'm going to contact them to see if they can creat trays for custom sizes. That might be ideal. And a few tidbits about the displays in case anyone else has a similar issue and need. Materials: African mahogany, no adhesives (screws only), water based finish Dimensions: top: 30" x 18" with a 1/4" rim on all 4 sides back: 30" x 8.5" front: 30" x 3" I intentionally designed the front and back dimensions to give the top a 20 degree downward slope. In my testing this was the maximum degree incline for display while also being flat enough to prevent the coins from sliding down into their felt compartments. This mostly works - I have at least one silver piece that is smooth enough to slide.
Not to be rude, but you seem to want to reinvent the wheel. Display how you like and what fits your collection. I use the "far far too red" trays from Amazon; which are Lighthouse brand. I have circa 800 in trays and can't imagine the need to try and display each coin. I also don't have a problem with flips under the coins.
Victor, I really like what you've done. In fact, I like it so much, why don't you just box it all up, as is, and send to me? I'll pay shipping, or if you prefer, I'll drive up and pick them up, if that makes it easier for you? You've already done so much work, I don't want to make you do any more than necessary. OK, maybe I'm joking, well for sure I'm joking. But, I do like what you've done, and the work you've done to create the display. Impressive! I am going to look on Amazon for the trays. I've got an old cabinet with shallow drawers. If I can find trays that fit them, then I won't have to make them myself.
This looks very nice. I'm wondering if you could make a matching bottom with a small tab on it to put the info card under the false bottom, but you could pull the tab to remove and get to the info card? Hope you can figure out something that fits your idea. Probably would have to use an adhesive and I'm not sure his that would affect your coins? Good luck figuring this out. Looking forward to the final product.
Somehow incorporating the void under the display for information is an awesome idea. I've tried using NFC chips that are so small they just reside in the lower corner of each compartment but they lack the 'pop' effect of having the large NFC chips behind the coin.
