Pareidolia or Something Else? 1817 Half Dollar

    I know that this coin has been cleaned and has a large number of scratches but I would like your opinion on the "7". The 1817/4 is very rare and this coin doesn't seem to match the known overdates. There appears to be another number protruding on the right side of the seven.

    It is actually O-111. Star 7 pointing to Liberty's nose rather than the curl, plus the die gouge from her ribbon are both diagnostic.

    That's very interesting, didn't realize this. So, in your opinion the "7" is just pareidolia?

    I was aware that it didn't match the known versions of the overdates. It does look like there's 'something' peeking out from the right side of the 7. Most likely pareidolia?

    It looks like the coin took a hit which shoved a bit of the 7 to the side.
