Help understanding why this Caligula As was overstruck?

I recently acquired this coin and was hoping someone with more ancient numismatic experience could give me their opinion on it. I believe this is a Balkan Type of RIC 100. It was overstruck on a Caligula As and I am trying to find out why.

In my research it appears coins were overstruck for two main reasons, being worn out and for political reasons. The Caligula legend that is visible appears to have good details so I think it is for political reasons. Caligula suffered "Damnatio Memoriae" after his death having his name "erased". Could this coin be a result of this act or is there another reason it was done?

I appreciate any insight on its history anyone might be able to offer. Thank you!

It was most likely overstruck because of the Damnatio. His coins were not supposed to circulate after that; so an unofficial overstrike kept it circulating.

I collect 4th century bronzes and unofficial overstrikes happened often after re-tariffing or when an enemy emperor's coinage was not allowed to circulate outside their territory.

Thank you Victor I thought that might be the reason when I purchased it. I appreciate you giving me your opinion!
