It didn't CAC because that is the epitome of an MS-70 treated, altered color coin. Some like the look. I don't. But that's just my opinion. If you like it, I'm glad you were able to get it into a problem free slab. Many don't make it.
That's what I've read. I owned a 1880 Indian cent that looked the same way. Thepennylady told me it looked like it was dipped in the ms70. Both coins graded as brown so I'm guessing the color happened after they went into the holder.
No, the color happened before they were slabbed. They are graded "brown" because any color besides original cherry red is called "brown" for grading purposes. Multicolored toning (even when its original, natural toning) is called brown - because it is not the cherry red of untoned copper.
The images have a lot to be desired. If what I am seeing is due to strike, I would call it MS63 BN. If there is rub (and you could only tell if the luster is impaired in hand), I would call it AU58.
Not surprised at all. PCGS is known to be much harder on these. For example, @BigTee44 's coin would definitely not have slabbed at PCGS.
Darn, I should have sent it to NGC instead. I just cracked and resubmitted to PCGS 2 weeks ago. Guess I just wasted my money... oh well I guess, you can't win them all
It looks MS to me but hits on the vertical and horizontal shield bars, along with hits on the left wheat and the "2" will keep it out of the upper registers. There are also what appears to be numerous pits or bumps on both the O and R fields, but that might be an artifact of the toning.
What do you think now? Some surface marks / bag marks, but Gem luster and color in my opinion. I think MS64 BN... RB if they take it easy on me. Wondering now if I should go with NGC instead of PCGS. Hmm... Well, in the meantime, I like it enough to make it my avatar.
"How do you like me now?" The marks in the center of the shield are more prominent in your images, and I think 63 might be a stretch as a result but these are sorta out of scope for me. The color is just a whole 'nuther coin from the original images. Very close to a retained cud on the reverse; wouldn't shock me if there's field displacement. Very, very nice. Pushes all my buttons.
OK, OK, RB is out of the question now that the dreamy love feelings have faded a little. But these are graded less on bag marks than, say, Morgan Dollars. So I'm sticking with 64 from somebody. PCGS or NGC.
Darn thing got shipped to me in a folded piece of paper, no padding in the outer envelope, but it survived. Sigh.
