I picked this up at my LCS a few weeks ago. I'm not an ancients collector but I grab one once in awhile. I feel like this is Byzantine but I don't know for sure. Can you tell me more? Emperor, year, denomination?
It's an anonymous follis. I couldn't tell you whether it's a class A2 or A3 without diameter, weight. Most are the smaller types. It has pretty decent details, for the type. From reign of Basil II and Constantine VIII (976-1028), very common. The most prized ones are the enormous (35-40mm.) ones. Most are the smaller, c. 28-30mm. variety. Here's a table to find the sub-variety: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/numiswiki/view.asp?key=Anonymous Byzantine Class A Folles
Here is a page on anonymous folles: http://augustuscoins.com/ed/ByzAnon/ The OP coin is Class A2, struck 976-1025 or later. Most were struck under the famous Basil II, "The Bulgar Slayer." The lighter it is, the later it is. For more about it, see that page.
You didn't do bad for a first coin. It's better than the average A2. I found that it's kind of fun to collect the 51+ varieties (the different ornaments on that site), which were probably officina and/or mintmarks.
