Here’s your chance to acquire totally artificial, very expensive rarities. The Royal Mint and Stack’s Bowers are auctioning a single 5-kg gold coin and four 5-kg silver McCartney coins. Currently, with buyer’s premium, the bids are well over melt. If there were two gold coins so I could use them for bookends, I would bid. ;) Currently, it’s at $420,000 (+20%).

Anybody buying this probably won't even notice whatever loss they may take when they sell it.

There are a lot of McCartney fans (and Beatles fans). Statistically, there must be a fair number of them who are also super-rich. And with any auction, all it takes is two.

I mean, I was willing to pay well over spot for the Apollo commemoratives, and those weren't even particularly limited. If I had a thousand times as much money...

    It's only 20,000 above melt.

Whose math is wrong? I see current gold at 93596/kg making it worth 467980. So it's currently below melt.

    There are 32 troy oz in a kg, and current price I have is $2,918 per oz. So, 32 x 5 x 2918 = $ 466,880 melt. Current bid is $420,000 times 1.2 = $504,000 cost at present.
