I have been trying to come up with a modern coin to collect. Unfortunately every time I think I have found my new passion I get derailed. (Note I posted this on the NGC forum but can't get back into their site). I am more of a buy the book first kind of guy so I have found 3 books that might be my kick starter. If you have these books, or can offer any feedback please let me know. here are the books; the new Cherrypickers guide. the Redbook on State Quarters. The Redbook on modern Dollars. Thanks for readng. James
The Cherrypickers guide is for varieties. Which book did you get a VOL1 or a VOL ll. Vol 1 cover dominations 5 cents and under. VOL ll covers larger denominations.
Not anymore. The latest edition of Vol. 2 covers Half Dimes to Quarters. Vol. 3 covers all the larger denominations, bullion, commemoratives and Philippine coinage.
It is my understanding the new cherrypickers book contains hundreds of "modern" coins. I have very little knowledge when it comes to Modern issues but would not shy away from creating a type set of my own design. james
I had no idea, knew that vol ll started with half dimes. I will have to stop by my closest Barnes and Noble.
I tried on two occasions to get interested in a set of American Silver Eagles and lost interest. I never intended to include the Proofs which would have eliminated the over priced, over hyped 1995-W. With a mintage of 30,125, it's anything but rare. The mintage on this coin, the 1876 Twenty Cent Piece, was 14,750, and many of them were melted before they were issued. The mintage for the 1880 gold dollar was 1,600 with less than 1,000 surviving today. Some people claim that it is overrated.
