good catch, definately a fake I honestly can't believe that people get away with these "I don't know anything about coins" stuff! I wish we could figure out a way to stop it.
So, the first 4 in 1944 was filed down to look like a 1, then the coin was "circulated" to remove tool marks?
Yeah, good eye. I have to say that the seller does mention this possibility for those that actually care to read. Unfortunately, most ebayers don't. Coin is also in good shape. VDB should be on the bottom of the bust. Bigger pics may actually show that. Gazdon, As for being an educational tool you are SO right. I sold one like this a few years ago just for that purpose and CLEARLY labeled it a fake. Buyer was happy - just hope they didn't pawn it off for big bucks.
As you say the seller makes a point of letting potential customers know that they are not saying it is real, to me that is good, they are openly selling a possible forgery & there is nothing wrong with that :thumb:
I went ahead and reported the piece to ebay with a description of the problem. Although the seller disclaims the possibility of a problem in the description, the title labels it as a 1914-D. Therefore, I felt that I had to report it.
I guess I could agree with that point but really splitting hairs in the world of ebay. These are the people that allow the sale of 1804 Silver dollars after all.
Yes, but I report all of those that I find. They should not be sold either, unless they are clearly stated as fake/counterfeits/reproductions in the title.
I noticed the seller claims they know very little about coins. They sure have a bunch of coins for sale.
As evidenced by my "gold token" purchase on eBay they neither have the desire nor the inclination to stop any of these auctions regardless of their authenticity. They are playing the same game as my 4 year old does. If you pretend it doesn't exist then it doesn't. In the end all empires fall. Maybe this type of "I don't know if it is real or not" items for sale on eBay will be theirs.
have you noticed people that " don't know anything about coins " have all the rare coins that everyones looking for?
Unfortunately yes for the past several years. What scares me even more is that they assign grades and sometimes accurately. Just lucky guesses I suppose.
doesn't it look like the "14" is up to high? If it was where it was supposed to be, it would be right on top of the mint mark. Do you think someone could have re-punched it?
