What would you grade this coin? Thinking about picking it up. Edit: Sorry. I inserted a "Media Library" file the first time.
Those pictures are tough to read (slightly out of focus), but I'd wager this is a 64. It does appear to be unusually well struck for a 1921. Looks attractive, if it is at the right price. Do you have a chance to see it in hand before you buy it?
I wish I could see the fields better, particularly the left obverse, but I have to go with a solid 65. The strike and eye appeal are excellent, and this looks like a coin I would be happy to own.
Okay so it's hard to see clearly because the picture is a bit fuzzy. Particularly around the hair. If the hair is as smooth as it looks in the picture I'd say about AU58. However I feel like the coin is better than it looks. Put me down for MS62
Remember, this is a 1921. The hair is notoriously flat on these due to the high relief. This is actually a very well struck piece.
I think MS65, too, but it wouldn't be a shocker to me if they held it back. It's a gem, though, my book, every bit of it.
I suppose I don't have Good point. I'm no expert on this year but that makes sense. I'll stick with MS62 though
With all due respect, I can't even tell if the coin has circulated or not from these images. It does a disservice to one's own skill development to try to read too much into small images like this.
It is an MS-64. Really considering picking this one up! I can pick it up about $100 under the NGC price guide.
A 64 is nothing to sneer at, for sure, though they are out there at this grade if you have the wallet. Have you checked Heritage's auction prices of late? And for grins, go see the PCGS price.
Nailed it! NGC price guide says $925. NGC price guide is (almost) always high. If you check the Heritage Archives, over the past six months these have sold for $520 to $1000 (with most being in the $650 to $850 range). These are common coins, and sell quite regularly. So, "$100 under the NGC price guide" is a fair price, but is on the higher end of the current market value. If I was able to see it in hand and was convinced that it was a really strong example, I'd probably do it. If you have return privilege, and can examine it in hand and return it if it isn't high end, I'd probably do it. But you aren't getting a great deal - you are paying a fair price for a good coin (if the pictures are accurate).
The store does have a 30-day return policy. I may see if there is any more wiggle room as far as price... It never hurts! Well done on the 64!
