That one is PCGS graded, but I would look for gold coins with a bit more luster. I don't think that the price increases for an AU are that much more for the $2.50 Indian.

This one is raw, but it will give you an idea.

I do like more luster on the gold. And I would of gone for an au but all my local coin shops had detail's graded ones and this was the only strate graded Indian they had.

I don't know where you live, but if there are any coin shows in your area, they can provide a lot more opportunities to see more coins. The $2.50 Indians are among the common of the "old," pre 1933 gold coins. The only coin in this set, which is a real "stopper" is the 1911-D. That one is not rare, just pricey.

And, yes, I'm an old guy who has been around forever. I put this set together in the late 1980s.

Nice set! I could only imagine the prices back in the 80's. And I live in northern Utah they only have a show once a year and I missed it sadly.

They were not as cheap as you might think. My goal was to put the set together for $200 a coin minus the 1911-D which was in the $1,100 to $1,200 range for an AU. Finding them for less than $200 was a challenge. I got there. One of the pieces I had purchased in the 1960s which was $57.50. That was high retail back then.

$2.50 Indians are a great way to start collecting gold coins. It’s the only type of gold that the average collector can afford to compete. Welcome to CT.

Congratulations. This is the closest I'll ever get to owning gold, a gold plated copper round I bought at my local show yesterday.

Welcome to cointalk. Nice 2½. Some folks like gold shiny. Some like it with orange crustiness (due to the copper content oxidizing). I have a few of both.

Try Wizard Coin supply and look under Capital Plastics holders. I think they still make the holder for the $2.50 Indian gold set.
