Hey guys! Ive got a Gold 1959 Mexican 20 Veinte Pesos coin , and in the two tiny stars you can see two letters, a 'G' in the left star,,,,and a 'P' in the right star? ive searched everywhere online to find out anything about it but had no luck,my coin is not the only coin with it, ive seen many pics online with the same letters. Could possibly be the mints assayers initials? coins designer? Maybe someone on here can help with the mystery? thanks!
Probably the designers initials. But, bear in mind, they could also be an identification mark because between 1960 - 1971 there were over 1 million restrikes bearing the 1959 date.
Thanks for the reply, I don't think it has anything to do with restrikes , as I've seen these initials on lots of non-restrike years. I'm just really surprised I can't easily find any mention of it on any of the pages where they discuss this coin , like when they describe the coin they point out all the features,,, except those little letters.

I couldn't find any on Heritage that definitively state that the coin is not a restrike, most if not all the restrikes have it, so nothing to conclude from that.
Let's say the letters are present in the original issue. This reminds of Spanish coins but they had years in their stars instead of letters. The timing of when these coins were struck should pose some interesting questions. The original issue of this coin was in 1917. This was during the chaotic Mexico revolution. Was this coin issued right after the 1917 constitution? Revolution coins issued around 1915 are electrum coins with minuscule amount of gold. The word 'guerrero' seems to be very important during this time. Could it be a guerrero peso?
