Here it is, a worn but nice denarius of Sextus Pompey with the head of Pompey the Great. I have wanted a Pompey for my historical figures collection. Sextus Pompey, AR Denarius Uncertain mint in Sicily, (Catania?) 37-36 BC 3.25g Obv: MAG PIVS IMP ITER Bare head of Pompey Magnus right; capis behind, lituus before Rev: PRAEF above, CLAS ET ORAE MARIT EX S C in two lines in exergue. Neptune standing left, holding aplustre in right hand, resting right foot on prow, between the Catanaean brothers, Anapias and Amphinomus, carrying their parents on their shoulders, Crawford 511/3a; Sydenham 1344; Sear 334; RRC 511/3a; BMCRR Sicily 7; Pompeia 27; Catalli 2001, 824 Ex-Londinium Coins
Congratulations on your Sextus Pompey, Orfew! I call that informally the party scene coin due to the intricate reverse with all of the activity. It's nice to see you move beyond the 12 Caesars and expanding your collection.
I hope I didn't unintentionally hijack the thread. I just realized OP might have been wanting to only discuss their 1st purchase of 2017 and just realized thread is in Ancient Coins forum. I thought it was one of those general forum threads asking everyone to post their first purchase of the year. My bad if that's not the case.
Congrats! You have a nice big flan and a good portrait on that one. I've always thought coins of the late Republic and Imperatorial period complement an early Imperial collection well.
We get this a lot and consider it the price of the CT management decision to have that mixed list of Recent Topics on the right top of each page. It is easy to see a topic that seems interesting without realizing which section posted it. On the other hand I hope you are not offended by the fact that relatively few of us appreciate our bill as anything special since we do not collect paper. Ancients people: Should we go back to posting "Ancients:" before our titles like we did before CT gave us our own space separate from World? I'd be happy if the software did this for each section appending the section from which a new post is made as an automatic feature. Come to think of it, I'm happy now, too.
Hope everyone had a Happy New Year. As for my first purchase of 2017, I finally got the 2016 set of Silver Park quarters in PF70. It was a great price and now this collection is up to date.
