Just curious, anyone know what Kryptonite Comics was implicated in? Shane seemed to be getting flack over on CU, just curious what that was over and if something happened.
From what I'd read on the NGC boards, it was that he was severely behind in paying consignors back for their coins. Wish him the best in getting caught back up.
Yep. He has had problems since the middle of 2015. I don't know if he ever caught up. Judging by his consignments, probably not (which is a shame).
This is interesting to learn. I haven't even looked at his listings in months, since I bought a coin from him that had obvious coin roll machine damage that wasn't mentioned in the description. It was visible in the enlarged photos, if you knew what you were looking for already, but it really just looked like a lighting artifact otherwise. I never made a big deal about it, because it was a less than $10 purchase, but I never looked back, either.
I agree on the ones you called "artificial". The "real" example may not be artificial or intentional toning, but it's not desirable. It clearly happened after the coin had been circulated, and quite possibly after it had been cleaned.
IHC are made by the mint. Toned coins are active chemical processes that happen to the coin. Rainbow displays on coins are extremely rare event to happen to coins and are rightfully subject to equally extreme inspection and doubt without a proven mechanism that verifiably happened to a specfic coin. I woke up one morning and found my ASE is magically rainbowed toned in my plastic slab is just not enough of an explaination.
Why are you bumping a thread that hasnt had a reply in almost two years for a comment that was made half a decade ago? Watch some football or find something you enjoy
As crazy as it may seem to someone who makes their living off of coins, maybe he "enjoys" talking about coins. Yeah, old thread but seems tone deaf to chasten people wanting to talk about coins on CoinTalk.
Maybe, but it is impossible to hold off toning forever without routinely polishing the coins and we are not doing that.
That is yet another issue. And with Morgans, it is so common. For generations, Morgans have been cleaned, in what is considered conservationally accepted fashions. What is considered acceptable is debatable and worthy of discussion and it has been discussed ad nusium. Now they come back and they are re-toning, often with nice rainbow surfaces. All of it leaves a wide swath of leeway between conservation, and harming coins. Even more the case if one is Artificially Toning the coins. The TPGs claim that when grading the coins, and accessing toning, they are focused on the original surface. I don't even know what that means. I wouldn't mind a detailed explanation of what they mean, otherwise it is just nice sounding words that covers their but when they knowingly slab an AT coin, which, despite the pontifications otherwise, seemly is exactly what they do.

That’s ridiculous, those collections are amazing, and it doesn’t provide any additional incentive to coin doctors who artificially tone coins.
sure it does. I haven't looked over those collections so I can not say how amazing they are or not, but without a doubt, registry sets drive conumer and auction behaviors and this will be no exception. It will fuel artificial toning of coins and it fules the market. More importantly this gives incentive the TPGs to give AT coins slabs and to profit from mass grading of AT coins.
