Perusing a local auction site and ran into this. I been plundering US coins since the middle of last century and did not know we had an Illinois commemorative half featuring Honest Abe. I may have to chase this one.

Oh yeah. And for some reason (maybe not always because of cleaning?), they're often toned like that one.

I will have to hunt mine down, I remember mine being a dark funky tone also.

Dang it, I thought I had pictures of mine but can't find. I'll have to dig it out. Mine was mostly blast white save for a few black spots, if I remember correctly.

Mine is not a well preserved specimen. Surly it has been dipped several times.

That's a danged fine looking coin. It just surprises me that I was oblivious to this one.

This is a detail coin so you might want to look a bit harder and find one that’s straight graded without details.

I wouldn’t be mad if that reverse made a comeback on something modern and updated from the mint.

Maybe the *New Half dollar. I haven't gotten the design down yet, however.

Thats a highly detailed strike. Maybe a gold Commemorative?

Can't find the photos but found the coin.
New Photos, from what I remember, lol 10 years ago. I started a thread on this coin it was one of my first here, maybe made a post. this one was dipped and starting to pink in color. I did a little correction, I guess with the simple neutralizers and qtip rolls. It has been sitting in a Whittman for years. Hanging out with the Kennedy's. It's an Au 55-58.

Some of these come dark and others are blast white. Rainbows or brighter colors are scarce. I have casually looked for an ideal toned example but have not found the right one yet.

I agree- Randy- you could find a better one than the one in the OP. One with a straight grade.

PS- I looked up the cert# on the coin in the OP to see if there was a TrueView image on the cert page- since it’s in a PCGS Gold Shield holder. But that must be an earlier Gold Shield submission since it does not have any images on the cert page. (Gold Shield automatically includes a TrueView nowadays).

It's a newer holder (you can tell based on the little NFC tag in the bottom left corner). I would guess this was a recent submission and the photo has not uploaded yet, PCGS forgot to upload the photo, or the submitter requested to have the photo taken down (I recall reading on the PCGS forum that someone succeeded getting their photo removed since it was so bad).

And like you mention, one can certainly find a straight graded example of this type for a reasonable price so there is little reason to settle for a details coin (unless the details example is priced very low or one is doing some sort of details set).
