CCCS was very supportive but didn’t know what it is. I just sent a note to PCGS. Let’s see if they respond. Also sent pictures to the Royal Canadian Numismatic Association. Hopefully they’ll have some info.
the proof Composition is 92.5% silver, 7.5% copper the circulation strike is 100% nickel. did you run a magnet test for giggles? might be steel. Another thing, a loonie is like 26mm, a toonie is like 28mm. if it's 38mm it's like morgan dollar size, wow! is it super thin maybe? I'm a real novice when it comes to canada coins. but I'd think it's either got to be an enlarged replica made for some reason, or something really special and some sort of trial piece when they were checking out the designs to use possibly. you never know I suppose stranger things have gotten out of mints and turned up. I wish you luck!
I hadn’t checked it with a magnet. Just did now and it’s not magnetic. Also it’s not thin like a quarter, it’s thicker like a dollar.
I just don't know really. it's odd for sure. at 38mm, this falls into the morgan and peace dollar, standard 90% silver comem blank size or the 999 silver comem blank size... those are readily accessible, it could be a private struck 90% or 999 round replica. why though??? no idea. I can't think of a single canadian coin that goes over about 36mm in diameter and that would be the old silver dollars up to 1967 or the newer proof silver dollars....
Much respect the RCM for even responding to my email. See below: “Thank you for contacting the Royal Canadian Mint. In regards to your recent email, please note that was were not able to locate any details pertaining to the coin you mentioned. It would lead us to believe that it may not have been produced by the RCM.” I also sent a handful of emails to some Canadian coin clubs. Haven’t heard back from them.
Bumping as I just noticed this piece again. Haven’t learned anything new about it. Have a larger local show tomorrow. Will bring it and see if anyone knows. Thanks
