Quick update on my 1902 S Morgan...

Sorry for the new thread on this! Just wanted to say I am probably sending my coin off within the next 2 weeks to PCGS. I saw some 1902 S coins graded by PCGS and mine looks like it could get a very nice grade. However, I noticed a never posted a really good picture of the reverse showing the ding in relation to the whole coin. Let me know what you all think now that you can see it whole? Also, going to try and take my coin to a guy who has sent thousands of coins to PCGS (he owns a big coin company) and they have very good relations with each other and see what he says about it. Should be interesting if I can even meet up with him, thanks for all the help you guy's have provided, this one coin has taught me a ton.

I've seen coins with worse dings straight grade.

 

I think this one is a toss up. It might grade, it might not. It's a better date which will help with the TPGs...but it does have a decent hit on the rim that they may cal damage.

 

I still think it will straight grade AU-50. AU-53 on a good day.

 

I would buy that as a straight-graded coin.

I don't think that one little rim hit is enough for a details. Can't be too sure from the pics but it's at minimum a 55 and up to 63. I_think it circulated very slightly so my money is it coming back straight graded at 58 unless there are hairlines or some other thing we aren't seeing that would details it.

 

I'm going with a 58 myself and I hope I"m wrong and it turns out better than that.

 

For what you've got into it, I would just send it in to see what happens. Even in a details slab, it's worth more than $24+submission fees and shipping.

 

Good news today, took it to a pretty knowledgeable guy who said for certain a strong AU 58 (maybe lower due to the rim). As for the ding he said he thinks it will most likely grade in his opinion but said it has a "small" chance of coming back details. Then he offered to ship the coin out (I pay them, no extra) under the company name and they have sent thousands and thousands of coins to PCGS and the owner is good friends with the VP over there. Don't know if that matters but I would feel great about sending through them!

Who sends it shouldn't matter. The graders don't know who's coin they are grading, that helps keep them impartial. That being said, I would do the same thing in your place. One never knows.

Thanks guys! I was recently posting on another message boards and I posted these new pictures the best I can take of my coin with my phone. The picture with the flash bothers me, it takes away every positive of my coin and amplifies the negatives. Someone hated the dirt/gunk on the neck on obverse and said it looked cleaned as well. What do you guys think? After seeing some of the comments on these pictures I'm starting to think about holding off on sending it lol. You can super zoom on the last picture, if you guys need any other pictures lemme know the originals were bad.

 

Send it in. The learning experience alone will be worth the money. Even with a details grade, you could probably sell it for more than you have into it. No way on Earth this coin comes back any less than AU details, and I'm guessing at least AU55.

 

I would take the advice of the dealer friend who looked at it in hand and who submits to pcgs regularily over the advice of members of an online forum. The simple reason is it's nearly impossible to truly evaluate a coin in a photograph. It only shows the coin at one angle with one lighting. To truly evaluate a coin you must move the coin and look at different angles and different light.

A good photo will hide the blemishes and only show the good parts of the coin and a bad photo will do the opposite.

I don't see anything obvious in these photos that kills this coin (other than possibly he rim hit). If a knowledgeable person who has viewed it in hand says to submit it...then I'd submit it.

 

Based on that last new photo that coins going to end up in a details slab.

 

This last set of images has me thinking more in the "good EF" range for the coin.

I would probably rate your coin an EF-40. My wife bought me the attached 1902-S for Christmas. Although it said VF on the slip, my unofficial grade is an F-12.
