And this one (it has a banker's mark and it was struck somewhat off-center) with a similar reverse as the Titus denarius shared by @Carl Wilmont. The moneyer of this issue is believed to be Gaius Memmius, who was Tribune of the Plebs in 54 BC. There is plenty of mystery about the moneyer and the historical significance of this issue. According to Crawford, the reverse recalls a victory in Bythinia and Pontus ca. 58 BC of Memmius’ uncle, also called Gaius Memmius. Michael Harlan (HJB) makes an argument that the event was more probably an earlier victory, probably in Hispania by the moneyer’s father (also called Gaius Memmius, Quaestor in 76 BC, husband of Pompeia, sister of Pompeius) or grandfather (Gaius Memmius, Praetor in 103 BC), and suggests some characteristics of the trophy point to a victory in Hispania. The Memmius conferment as Imperator is not corroborated by prosopographic evidence, but a fragment of an inscription in stone was found in Cadiz, Spain reading CMEMMIO / IMPERATOR, lending credence to Harlan’s suggestion of a Spanish operation.
