Dear Secret Santa, Thank you for the wonderful 1962 US Proof Set. You opened a Time Capsule in my life. In 1962, I was a newspaper boy for the Dayton Daily News in Dayton, Ohio at 14 years old. My Dad said lets take some of your earnings and order 5 Proof Sets from the US Mint. We had bought a 1960 & 1961 from a small Coin & Hobby Shop. The five sets arrived from the US Mint in secure packaging. Later that year the church we attended was building a new church building. The builders had made what is called a corner stone dated 1962. They asked if any church members would like to donate something to put in the hollow corner stone for a time capsule item. I donated one of my 1962 Proof Sets. It is still in there to the best of my knowledge. Over the years I had a good collection of Proof Sets & other coins. That is until 1985, when my soon to be Ex-wife took them & sold them to a pawn shop. I never found out which pawn shop. Over the years I have continued to collect coins as it is a great hobby. The gift I gave the church in 1962 has been rewarded to me in a beautiful memory brought back to life by Secret Santa in 2016. Bless all the members here at CoinTalk for everything they do.
Well, I opened mine today. Thank you for the gift SS. Got an 1911 Barber Dime and a 1953-S Carver Washington Half Dollar. Admittly, I was easy to shop for. I will try to get better pictures later. Sent from my A463BG using Tapatalk
Welp, my stocking was empty this morning - but I have faith. It was good to see my gift was received! MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!!!
Thank you Secret Santa!! These are my first Dan Carr piece, not counting the Rhode Island State Quarter. I Love them, this is so much fun!
Wow. That's awesome. I've always wanted one of those. Good to see some Carr made it in the SS! Haven't opened mine yet, but soon
One is copper, the other .999 silver, as indicated by the lettering on the edge of the medal. I'll try to get a pic up of the edge in a little while.
These are the other coins from my Santa , Both are really neat specimen with lots going on in their details.
Yeah. I've always wanted a DC GCC medal in silver or gold but the gold can get expensive. Being a lifelong Californian I love this design! Are you a Cali guy too?
Thank you SS for my gifts! Each of them is very intriguing. I also enjoyed the letter, this is the 2nd year I have failed to do that for my recipient. I will certainly include one next year. Onto the coins, By far my favorite design- .999 1/10 1976 D Peg Leg Ike - my first 1971 D Talon Head - my first 1964 DDO - love this one. Used it to test my new glass. 1893 Colombian Half - great design- love this issue There was also a colorful copper coin from 1937 - Ireland Republic Penny. Thank you Thank you! Merry Christmas
Thank you SS, all great gifts!!! Love the dime cube plus lots of other silver, what's not to love! The SMS is beautiful and the New Market Maryland medal is cool. Merry Christmas Darryl
Merry X-Mas everyone! And, someone's been following my general postings on CT . They don't make coins like this 1921 German 50 Pfennig anymore! Though, this is unique in and of itself. Reading up on this post-WWI hyperinflation coin, it's made of porcelain! It makes sense, too, since Germany was so in debt due to their loss and the consequent burden of responsibility for the war that fell on them (revealed partly by the 10,000 Mark Westphalia coin above, which was issued the same year as the height of their hyperinflation in 1923). Some nice qualities on this piece that I'd like to see more of on modern and classic coins that I look for are: 1. High relief 2. extraordinarily nice denticles/beaded rims 3. and the concave fields punctuated by (and punctuating) the high relief devices. This one's by far my favorite of the lot, and I'll be reading about and looking more at these types. I love learning / discovering something new and interesting! Thanks Secret Santa!
Just opened mine this morning. Thanks Secret Santa! Definitely one of the coolest modern commemorative designs.
Santa left this for Santinidollar: a 1993 silver dollar commemorating the 250th birthday of Thomas Jefferson. I wish I could pick up all of the toning on the reverse. Rainbow over Monticello! Thank you, Secret Santa! Merry Christmas to all!!!!
Thank you secret santa! My photo does not do the workmanship that went into this coin justice. She is gorgeous. Sent from my SM-G935P using Tapatalk
Merry Christmas everybody! This one came to me from our good friend Darryl @USS656. This lovely piece has cool die breaks on both the obverse and the revers. Perhaps one of you VAM guys can let me know what it is. Thank you very much Darryl, you are too kind.
