Nothing special, but I bought these for $6-7 apiece. I plan to give them to a local Scouts group. On a date to be decided, I will go to their meeting and run a coin collecting merit badge event. I figured these could be door prizes or something.

I also picked up 30 lbs of loose world coins for them to dig through and pick the ones they want to keep.

Not to sound rude, but why do people slab common modern coins?

Many reasons! But, since these were bulk submissions, I think someone was trying to get a top pop coin from rolls of UNC coins. Other reasons include thinking it’s an error, thinking it’s super high grade, sentimental value, lack of knowledge, etc.

Years ago, when Alabama required 9th grade World Geography, I used to get bulk world coins from a flea market dealer (about 8 cents each or less). I would select so that they would all be different. Then I would have my students pick one blindly from a box. They would get to keep the coin, but they would then do an in-depth report to the class on that country and its culture.

These are not specimen slabs but they also don't have the numeric grading. Is there a name for this kind of slab?

I have never had a coin slabbed, but I believe modern coins cost $20 to encapsulate. You paid $6. What do you consider the value of the coin to be? $6? Negative $14? Something else?

Great question. This is as I have learned it, could be wrong and am happy to be corrected. When you bulk submit coins, you get a reduced rate. But, when you do that, you put a minimum grade to get. Any coin below that threshold gets labeled like this. The value of the coin? $6-7, since it’s what I paid. I’d say they’re probably worth $10 if I were to sell them individually, but I’d have to find someone who wanted a random coin from a random country.

What a cool idea. I got the coin collecting merit badge way back when. I'm happy to see that it's still a thing.

Clearly that was a bulk submission - the cert numbers indicate hundreds each of them were submitted, and in a bunch of different batches too, maybe thousands of coins. Why, who knows. Almost like a sample slab.

That is so nice of you, great idea. We need future collectors. Awesome, I love it! They will be so happy.
