I was under the impression that toning actually helped protect the coin from further corrosion. Is that incorrect?
NO, nothing really does except complete lack of all gasses such as air. As to the grading services dipping a coin without permission, I doubt it. Like any organization, any additional work without a monitary payment would be not in the organizatioins best interest. Dipping or cleaning a coin without payment would also serve no purpose for the organization. Making customers feel good is one thing but doing extra work for them without payment is just not the American way. I know that they will clean or dip a coin if requested but also usually charge money for that service. It is extra work for thier employees and if you owned a buisness you sure wouldn't want them doing extra work and your organization not being paid for that service. It is possible but I just am to aware of the way organizatioins work. And if they did anything to make a coin look better for a customer I'm sure they would make a big deal our of it to compensate for lack of payment. Sort of like taking your car in for an oil change and they said we also rotated your tires, added brake fuid, reuilt your engine, put on new brakes and all for no extra charge. I can't even get free air in my tires around here.
Also, as far as organizations not knowing a coin has been dipped or cleaned. I've seen way to many coin shops with coins marked cleaned or dipped. I know many coin dealers that have sent coins in for grading and have had many, many come back dipped or cleaned. This is why so many dealers would rather sell coins raw in 2x2's because they have been classified as dipped or cleaned. At coin shows most dealers like to sell slabbed coins due to the higher price they can charge especially for higher prices coins. Verry possibly many of the rarer coins have been dipped to some degree in the past when cleaning a coin was the thing to do but that, as many other things is fading away.
Yes, it is correct. A toned coin that is stored properly is much less likely to undergo additional toning than one that is not toned at all.
Wow. Seems the majority feels it is ok to dip. since i started taking my..our hobby more seriously i have read alot on it. Its dishonest if you are going to try and sell the coin. Period. If you are going to keep your collection just for you forever, go ahead and paint lips on a Morgan. I'm sure there is no coin god to look down and frown upon you. But you guys know youre intention is to deceive JMO
