I am thinking about buying this coin, but I want to know if it is fake or not first. I am in the process of figuring out the weight of it. Here are some pictures of it.
I say fake. It resembles the J-1558, but the detail is very bad plus it should be a proof coin. Even if were an impaired proof, it would still have much sharper detail.
This is only my gut reaction while looking at the coin on my phone, but I'll take "Pathetic Imitations" for $200, Alex.
Here is a link to the magnificent Simpson collection of Goloid patterns. http://www.pcgs.com/SetRegistry/publishedset.aspx?s=129388
While my experience with US patterns is essentially nil, I've looked at enough pictures of them to say that this piece looks highly suspicious.
I just started browsing his other sets. Two words: coin. porn. I truly hope he lives in a secure location where he can have these coins displayed instead of having them all locked away. There are so many coins in his collection I will never get a chance see in person. I hope he donates his collection to a museum someday so I can go there and just see all these amazing coins!
What a dream combination, a Texas billionaire who owns a pro sports team with a passion for collecting rare coins. I've drooled over his proof Morgan and pattern dollar collections more than once. A truly amazing collection that will likely never be matched by another individual. OP coin is likely a forgery.
There is no way to answer this without seeing pictures of what you found. If one of the items you found resembles the fake Goloid dollar in the original post of this thread, the odds are astronomically high that what you have is another fake. (Pattern coins seldom saw circulation or got buried underneath houses, for one thing.)
