Picked this up today. I’ve heard of tapered planchet errors but never seen one before. Any thoughts or info on this coin or the error type is greatly appreciated. It’s also a higher grade 1956 P Jefferson. Weighs 4.50g. Thanks.
I don't think that is a tapered planchet. It looks like an altered surface. IMHO The lack of the upraised rim makes it questionable. Tapered Planchets I will tag @mikediamond @Fred Weinberg @JCro57
I don’t think it’s altered PMD at all but like I said, I’m not an expert on this type of error. I did look up several slabbed tapered Jefferson errors that have sold on Heritage over the years and this looks almost identical, but again I’m here to learn. Here’s a link to one example. https://coins.ha.com/itm/errors/195...0411-52236.s?ic4=GalleryView-Thumbnail-071515 Thanks.
Interesting that both examples have a short taper to them. Like only less than a quarter of the planchet was affected. The reverse shows a slight upraised rim. I agree the obv looks damaged, but the coin as a whole does not.
For the guys saying it is PMD, could you please explain the strike weakness in the "C" and "T" in cents without having any disturbance to the metal surface? Not an error guy, but considering the similarity to the Heritage tapered planchet shown, it looks legit to me.
With the example given, I'm convinced you may well have a tapered planchet. As I said before, I'm no expert.
I didn’t pay a nickel for it. But they generally sell in the $60-80 range so I’m still way in the good on it.
