Now that 2024 is nothing but a memory, here are the coins I sold in 2024. These were in my Box-of-125-Coins and have all been replaced / upgraded.

    First Coin sold in 2024:
1886 S/S Half Eagle Coronet, Motto (VP-001) NGC MS62 CAC

Maybe I should not have sold this coin, as it was prior to the runup in gold prices. My reasoning for selling it at the time was that I was never going to play in the "Big" gold end of pool, and thus this was sort of an outlier in my collection. My goal now is to only have denominations up to G$2.5 or maybe even only Gold Dollars (which I already own), so this coin will not be replaced/ upgraded.

Regret Level: Mild regrets on selling this one, but nothing too devastating.

    2nd Coin Sold in 2024:
    1943/2-P 5C FIVE-CENT PIECE - JEFFERSON PCGS MS64 CAC

Bought this one way back when in 2014 as there are very few ways to get a business strike Jefferson with a CAC sticker. So it filled the "spot" and I was happy for a long time. But eventually I grew to dislike the fact that it was not a MS67 "WOW" Jefferson that are beautiful. @Lehigh96 and a few other people over the years made me realize how 'meh' 5c Jefferson in MS64 can become 'wowzer' in grades of MS66+. So, I put it up for sale at high-high retail on eBay and it sat for a long time before someone wanted it enough to pay up. In hand, while a desirable variety for many people, its just flat looking, no real luster. I also don't really geek-out for minor overdate varieties. Yeah, I lost the CAC sticker, but I got an upgraded coin MS67FS with nice toning.

Regret Level: No Regrets yet! I got great money for this, and purchased a coin I like better to represent the War Nickel Type.

    3rd Coin Sold in 2024:
    1900 S 10C DIME - BARBER LIBERTY HEAD NGC AU58 CAC

One of my only Pedigree coins. But I never really loved this example, but it filled the spot for over a decade. I do like "crusty" coins in general, but not this type of crusty. So many nice Barber dimes out there, I finally decided to get a prettier one. Pedigree's dont really impress me unless the coin itself is 'wow'. The new coin is also CAC approved.

    Regret Level: No Regrets.

    4th Coin Sold in 2024:
1909 CENT - INDIAN HEAD NGC AU DETAILS ENVIRONMENT DAMAGE

This coin was from my childhood collection. Purchased raw around 1987 at a coin shop in strip-mall Windham, Maine. Sometime when I got back into collecting coins in the mid 2000's I send my childhood IHC to NGC, and this was the only one that came back a problem coin. I sold off all the childhood coins over the years, except one IHC which is forever in my Type Set. This one I held on to for many years, but listed on eBay and waited a very long time and for a very low price it eventually sold. It only paid back the grading fees, and I would say I even lost money overall, but I just wanted to get the only problem coin I ever owned out of the collection, to some new young kid probably that would actually think it was cool like I did in 1987. Not upgraded/ replaced as I already had the Type, and this coin was never in my Set anyways.

    Regret Level: No Regrets.

I did purchase a few 2024 "duds" as @ddddd would say. Those coins will be sold at some point, but not until mid 2025. Sometimes it takes getting a coin in-hand before you realize it was a mistake. I will list the duds in a separate thread in a few months time.

I think as long as we collectors are making small edits to our sets, updating our hobby goals, it makes sense to prune coin here and there, and free up funds for other coins that are more relevant to us. I have sold coins I really regret, but none fit that bill in 2024, so I would say overall the year was a success for selling, buying, and increasing my happiness from my Box-Of-125 Type set.

Good luck to everyone with their prunes, adds, and upgrades in 2025!

I wouldn't regret that one either. In the NGC images https://www.ngccoin.com/certlookup/2037628-025/58/ that is one butt ugly coin, and that reverse! Us mere mortals would have gotten Details - Scratched. You have to watch out for the grades on some of these "pedigree" coins.

@geekpryde I enjoyed this thread. It is good to prune and from what I see, I think you made the right calls on all of those coins.
