Hello all and Happy New Years Eve Day (if that makes sense)! It's my last thread before 2025 starts, so I wanted to do one of my favorite little coins. The Two Cent piece (1864-1873). It's " Special Two-Cent Tuesday! Please post yours and as always, thank you for visiting and posting!!
VF-35, this is from the coins that worked for a living suite. MS-65RD. This is the coin in my type set Happy New Year everyone. Be safe.
I've had this poor coin in and out of acetone baths more times than I care to count trying to get whatever had discolored the reverse off of the surface. I threw in the towel on that and just stuck it into my type set. I was pulling the 3cn this morning to get new pics to send to cuds on coins, so I figured I'd take this out to grab some newer pictures. Easily my best 2-center details-wise, unfortunately also a details coin (UNC-details by PCGS) but it looks great in that 7070 and that's good enough for me!
1864 Small Motto This 1870 Two Cent Piece shows why the "WE" wore off the motto ribbon so quickly. It is very shallow on the coin.
It’s not quite as nice as it seems in that photo, who makes it look a little more red than it is. It’s graded MS-64 R&B.
Love the 1864 small motto. I found one while metal detecting and when I realized what I had, I almost pooped my pants. It was in decent condition. Sold it though.
One of my Grade sets. AG3 to MS65. Makes for an interesting lesson in grading this coin. Note that the VG8 coin is a Large Motto, not Small as the slab label states.
Good to see you Bill. Happy New Year.......one hell of a grading set ya got there. An most marvelous teaching tool too.
Thanks for posting, you've inspired me to add such a set to my short list of collecting goals. I'm thinking Mercury dimes which were my first love but other series would make for an interesting and affordable effort as well.
Thanks Ken, And a Happy New Year to you and yours as well. I also have the same set in PCGS plastic as well. Just finished that one but haven’t added the VF 20 coin to the set pic yet. Some day….
One I had about twenty years ago. I believe this one was graded before PCGS gave the CAM (Cameo) designation to proof 2-cent pieces. I think it was a CAM contender. All I have left of it are these tiny pictures and the old forum avatar of it I used to use on Collectors Universe, back in the early 2000s.
