IMG_3917.JPG How do you determine the difference in the type of doubling when it appears on the face?

    Thanks,

SD or MD is what you have. It has the shelf.

Machine doubling, not doubled die. It also is on the motto.

This appears to be die deterioration doubling. It is different from machine doubling (also called mechanical doubling, strike doubling and sometimes ejection doubling). Machine doubling is known for being flat and shelf-like.

Here is an example of a true doubled die on the face of a Kennedy half dollar. I don't know if you can see it or not, but the doubling curves downward toward the field rather than flat and shelf-like.
