This appears to be die deterioration doubling. It is different from machine doubling (also called mechanical doubling, strike doubling and sometimes ejection doubling). Machine doubling is known for being flat and shelf-like. Chris
Here is an example of a true doubled die on the face of a Kennedy half dollar. I don't know if you can see it or not, but the doubling curves downward toward the field rather than flat and shelf-like. Chris
