One of my finds from yesterday , This is the second thread this week on a 1853 half dime. Now---> GTG , and tell me why Paddy pulled the trigger on a date he already has? This is a really cool half dime...let's here the grades ,as well to the explanation as to what's going on with this specimen. Have Fun!
I believe you're correct. As it's not a scratch , could be a platchet flaw. The images don't do justice . As it's a Purpleish, blue in color. There are areas where the line has a dies crack look,as it's raised along the line. It did grade clean...no details . My guess the die was going to be canceled die. Then they guess it was back to game on spitting out more coins. The line crack or what ever...had to be in the Reverse die its self.
All jokes aside, I'm guessing in the VF20-25 range and it seems that whatever it was (scratch or crack) was pre-strike?
Straight bisecting die cracks aren't that unusual. Here are a couple of bust halves... reverse of 1810 O-108 reverse of 1812 O-106
Very interesting coin. That was my first thought when I saw it. Doesnt mean im right, but you would think a crack would be more apparent on the devices as well. It makes sense that a light cut across the face wouldnt effect the narrower devices.
If you start at the F in OF,you'll notice it doesn't have any mark on the F .Look at the rim ....the crack starts the 3rd dentical right above the top flag of the F. . And runs under it, It exits on the left foot of the F. Notice that there's no line on the F but the crack exits to the rim on the top right. On the top right leaves on the wreath , only the two lower leafs show a mark . The center one "the high point"shows No line. Follow the line . The line crack goes under the A and exits the A, touches the H foot and continues through the bottom wreath . Never disturbing any of the devices high points. Plus there are areas where the crack has raised medal. The issue had to be the die was cut ,or the blank was damaged pre strike. If it was pmd such as a knife cut the high points of the devices would be damaged . Plus the medal along the crack wouldn't be raised. Again TPG graded and I've seen smaller cuts and scratches body bag a coin.
Notice the crack run back down through the left foot of the A and into the wreath. Will post some other images later .
