A common coin type/Ruler.... AR Denarius 3.54g. 19mm. mint in Sicily/crude strike Sextus Pompeus Roman Civil Wars obv. Pompeius Magnus rev. Neptune standing/ between brothers Anapias/Amphinomus
A superb portrait of Pompey the Great. That was a very talented celator. A true coin-sized masterpiece.
Cha-ching => now, that's a fricken sweetie!! => yup, I like that better than most of your goldies ... ... it just looks so much "more awesome" It looks like the ancient coins that "I" like to collect ... funny ... for some reason the goldies don't seem to catch "my" eye the way they seem to attract a few of you, eh? ... maybe I'm a gold snob?! (gawd, I'm a coin-hypocrite!!) ... I'm a judger
Thanks for all the support! I hope to start the New Year with a bang! That last Pompey coin/ along with the AV 1633 K-B Dukat/Hungary Ferdinand II will be my Christmas present from my wife. I still like the latter coin better/ looks almost prooflike.
WOW!!! I LOVE IT!!! That Pompey is GREAT!! What an incredible portrait!!! And what a fantastic reverse.... For those unfamiliar with the significance: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/numiswiki/view.asp?key=Amphinomus And Anapis
Morphos are pretty butterflies, I never collected that genus/just like with coins you have to be selective. Some of the morphos are really dimorphic meaning females and males are very different in colours/patterns/wing shape. Even with ancient coins 650BC to 1200AD you could blow 40 Billion US$ and still be far from complete. Many Roman coins esp. AV ones are in 6 figures, esp. in mint state quality. Ten years ago, I had one of the best swallowtail (Papilionidae) butterfly collections, most of my 12,000 specimens were AI quality=mint state in coins. I sold off 400K of them so far/ put $ into worldwide AV coinage. I still have 3/4 of my stuff to sell off, most will be in trade off vs mintstate Roman Aurei. Rest will be for a frame off restored 1967 Corvette 427/400HP/Powerglide/Factory Sidepipes!
That is a very nice Sextus Pompey! Do I need to be concerned about where you're going with this, Panzer? I mean, you're supposed to stay in the Gold lane and leave the HQ Roman Republican Silver lane to Carthago!
