I received yesterday 4 silver Kennedys I won on Ebay (for about a dollar less than the silver value), and they came in coin flips. I thanked the seller for including the coin flips, which weren't mentioned in the auction description, and I asked if they were PVC-free. He says he doesn't know, but he bought them at a coin shop. Are all coin-flips PVC-free?
I had a similar issue recently and was informed that dealers sometimes use PVC flips because they are cheaper. I think the dealer near me has been selling me these very same flips. The reason dealers may use them is price and most of their coins turn fast. I will have to ask my dealer next time I stop in the shop... I would put them into flips you know are PVC free just to be safe. Good Luck Darryl
I don't have other coin flips. What should I do with them in the meantime? Put them in a roll? Wrap them in tissue?
stick them in the 2x2 mylar window type cardboard holders,if you have any. i was going to suggest saran wrap but i'm not sure if it has pvc. grizz
No...not all coin flips are pvc free...I regularly get flips that are PVC...its cheaper to by PVC flips so a good amount of coins I buy come in them... I think a good way of telling is if the flip is more stiff, it is probably PVC free...bending and softer...PVC....If I am wrong someone will correct me. But all the PVC flips I bought were rather stiff...
It would be well worth the money to put them in 2X2's if they are fairly low priced coins, or in airtites if they are more valuable. Saran wrap, tissue, flips are all poor storage methods in my opinion.
PVC is used as a strengthening agent. I would only ammend your statement that the stiffer the window, the more likely of the PVC. Forgive me though, if you were stating that the stiffer the cardboard bracing suggested the lack of PVC. I confused myself whilst reading your statement.
I would leave them as they are until you get your own. A short amount of time in the flips they are in will probably do no damage. Order or go buy non-pvc flips. I don't think a week or two will make a difference. Trying to move/store them in the short term might damage them in other ways. Remember dealers use them for coins that might sit for a couple months before they sell them. GL Darryl
Better yet, if the coins are valuable to you - buy air-tites to keep them safe from scratches that might occur from staples in other 2x2's.
You've got that backwards. PVC is a softening agent - it's the soft pliable flips that contain PVC. The stiff flips are the ones that do not.
Yep, I could be wrong about the stiff vs flexible part. But PVC does add strength. Our plastic that seals the product at the bacon plant contains PVC, EVA, and Saran. PVC for strength, EVA for elasticity, and Saran to protect the product from UV ray damage.
