Just a reminder. The Blank was not clipped itself. The Blank was cut out of a sheet that shifted somehow. When the blank was being cut it cut where the previous blank was cut where there is already a round punchout. I believe it to be genuine!
Not thinking of what is possible is not logical. Those that read this thread will learn from it. That's what we do and it's a good thing.
It may be, but I kind of doubt it. In addition to the radius being wrong, there appears to be no evidence on the reverse of tapering near the "clip." On the obverse, the rim thins but does not taper, either. Here are the full size images, straight from the auction. Decide for yourself, but please find out what clips actually look like first:
The curve of the clip seems inconsistent just below the part of the hair and between the side burn and ear lobe.
All of the details on the edge of that clip should be weak. There isn't enough lateral pressure to raise the metal into the details on the edge. It should spread out before up. And there definitely shouldn't be flow lines radiating from the rim in that area, toward the center
Someone please get photos of the PCGS 1981d clip dime from eBay on here I can't figure it out. At least check it out. I think it will end the debate.
They both show pretty close to the same amount of metal push into the clip. It seems the PCGS example shows some difference in the rim though.
I wonder how the PCGS coin managed full rims and reeding right up to the edge of the clip, with no taper. It's not inconceivable that radically-clipped coins like this don't strike in the same fashion as lesser clips. I honestly haven't seen enough of them to be sure either way.
Perhaps it is just my eye, but both clips do not look smooth. Or is that neither clip looks smooth...
The PCGS coin doesn't have the little issues raising eyebrows like the original. It doesn't look circulated. It doesn't appear to have a series of marks. It does appear have a big bubble on FDR's forehead. I dunno. Seems like an error I would want in hand before purchasing.
