Who else in here collects foreign coins by date/mintmark? List what you collect: US-Philippines (all) Newfoundland/Maritime provinces (all, save $2 gold) British halfpennies, threepence, and florins (patiently, lol) Personally, I think its really cool. Sure, everyone has complete sets of merc dimes or walking liberty halves. But how many people do you know have a complete set of florins?
Yes, I try to collect the modern Russian coinage by date and mintmark but found it almost difficult to do - it's a monster project really.
I collect NZ pre-decimal by year and variety (two coins to go), British Indian coins by year and mintmark and Canadian coins (including provincials) by year and mintmarks. Oh and I have a full set of NZ florins if that counts
I am collecting British pennies/half-pennies year-by-year, and thinking of trying it with some German coins
No, I don't. Domestic coins, so to say, I collect by year (not by mintmark though), all others "by type" or "by design" only. Christian
The only thing I have actively purchased recently are a few silver dollars and bank tokens from Canada. But I don't have any intention of collecting all dates.
US and Canadian cents and nickels by date/mintmark, also British pre-decimal pennies (with H and KN mintmarks). I'm thinking of branching out into German Pfennigs by date/mintmark, and Australian and NZ pennies by date/mintmark.
I do try for mint marks & dates in my 2 & 5 mark collection and also in a few other areas such as my US cents
The world coins that I have are just randomly gathered from generous people who I know that send them to me or by family members who have traveled. I have been trying to get together a date/mm set of Nazi era German 2 Mark coins, slowly but surely.
Wow!! This is a very underrated set. The Soviet government tried to discourage coin collecting because they felt it contributed nothing to the state. Surprisingly they still made some mint sets but these were probably primarily intended for export to gain foreign currency. Mintages of these sets was small and quality was extremely high though corrosion is an extensive problem. Attrition is probably high as well. It mattered little because Russian coin collectors had little interest in Soviet era coinage and less still in moderns. These coins simply weren't saved except in some cases where significant quantities were saved. Apparently just about everything was melted in the early '90's so now some of these coins are available only in highly worn and beat up condition and can be tough as such. I've always bought these when I see them but most dates are highly elusive. I have had some successes though like a superb gem 1976 20k. I also managed to latch on to the scarce 1957 7/7 20k in ch Unc.
I dabble in collecting quite a few modern series by date/MM in Unc. Most of what I collect this way are older series and my favorite is the British Pennies from 1860 to 1970.
By date I collect a number of series from various countries. The only case where I have concentrated on mint marks is pre-republic Egypt.
What is a "foreign coin"? Seemingly, one persons foreign coin is not anothers on this plant of ours. :hammer:
Basically it means "coins from countries other than the one you live in". At least that is how I understood the question. Christian
I have a few foreign pieces, mostly stuff I pick up out of bargain bins that haven't been updated in a while and the silver value has outpaced the bargain price.
