As much as I want to say MS-64, this one is obviously AU-58. This is the one one of the three that I will keep.
It could go Ms 63/64 on a good day (depending on the grader). And it is a nice coin, worth a premium above a typical AU 58!
I'm not totally convinced that we are seeing wear as opposed to toning that you may be confusing as rub. Is the luster impeded in anyway on the high points in hand? It is either AU58 or MS64.
I'm pretty sure that's what I'm seeing. I'll show it to Bill Fivaz on Saturday. I need a lot of practice with AU-58 vs MS Morgans.
I think it is a MS coin with a quite weak strike. That date has plenty of weak strikes. It looks MS 63 to me. The eagle breast and feathers don't show wear, so much as strike issues. Nice toning as well. Not AU.
If it slabs at that grade, it would be worth certifying even if it means piggybacking on someone's submission (e.g. local dealer, etc.). I think someone would pay you a premium for the color.
NOPE. 63 to low 64 at most. Somebody is overgrazing these coins. Not to be negative, but there are too many cheek marks for a 65. I could see possibly a 64, or very high 63, which is what I said in the first place.
He said that the TPG would bump it to 65 because of the color (do they even do that???), so I guess he agreed with me that it was technically an MS-64. He vehemently disagreed when I said it was AU-58. In-hand, there are almost no marks on the cheek. But for $17 I'm not losing any sleep over it.
I think he is wrong about the bump. TPGs will give it a bump for EXCEPTIONAL toning. This coin has some extremely nice toning on the reverse. The obverse has some fade-to- black toning that is less desirable. In fact, NGC will not give a star to any toned coin that has black in the toning, as they see it as unattractive, and sometimes terminal. I think solid high end 63 to low 64 is realistic. The reverse is definitely a 65, but the obverse has some chatter on the devices, that will keep it at under gem grade. All in all, a very nice coin! $17 bucks is a bargain-- that coin would sell at a premium for the toning in grade.
I had it at 64+/65 before reading. Yes The tpgs do bump for color but I'm not sure this color would give a full point bump. It could bump an otherwise 64 to 64+ or 64+ to a 65 though.
I,ll be learning to grade Morgans for years to come...I try comparisons, but I have a lot of trouble trying to grade thru the toning, and with pictures, the diff. between ware and soft strike is also tough to see thru toning. But, I learn a lot from more experienced collectors, so it,s a challenge.
