hey all, I have been kinda laid up lately and not around, so I figured I'd tell ya about what I've decided to do. I just decided last week that I am going to try to put together a complete set of jefferson nickels from circulation. I figured that they are the last of the coins that you can still get in your change from before 1940, and it should prove to be a journey worth taking. Now before you say, there's a few that will be a problem... I realize this. The 50-D is gonna be tough and the 39-D as well, but truthfully I have seen most of the others over time, and given enough nickels, I bet I can finish this! I am gonna buy rolls and search them, as I just don't get but 3 or 4 nickels in change a week. This is the keys to my plan. I don't intend to search for varieties, just date and mintmark. Maybe I can inspire someone else to try something new. Wish me luck!
Good luck Mike. I've been doing the same with Jeffersons that I find here in Canada, and have most of them from 1964-present, believe it or not. Finding anything earlier up here is a bit of a stretch, but I got a 1961 last week, so it does happen. I've had to trade with wvrick to get some of the earlier ones I need, but I still have quite a few holes to fill, especially the keys.
Mike, I have been doing the same for the last few weeks. I'll generally get 4 rolls 2 or 3 times a week and go through them at lunch. I will generally get 4 to 5 pre 1960 nickels each time. So far I have only been focused on these or known errors. I have about 30 pre 1960 nickels stacked on my desk at home. I need to go out and pick up a book to keep them in which I plan to do today at lunch. Good Luck! I'll keep you posted on how I'm doing once I get them into a book. Darryl
I do the same thing, I get 10 rolls from the bank every week. I started a few weeks ago, and already I've found a 1939 (not a D), a '41, a couple of '46s and a bunch from the '50s.
i usualy get a case of $100 nickels at a time and usualy have good luck finding a few . it is the best way to get a complete jefferson set i have made two so far from circulation. ps if you need some nickels maby we can make a trade 4100
I get a box a week. Ive got an almost complet BU set, with all coins for 57 and up Full steps. The only proofs im missing are the keelboat and peace medal proofs.
You can get a decent 50-D with full steps for a reasonable price. I paid $20 for mine. The luster isn't the greatest, but it was the best I could find that day. I'm still on the hunt for others like it.
Searched $10 today Found: 40P 41P 58D 60D 60P 2 - 61D Seems to be about the average. Second group of $10 only yeilded: 39P 56D 59D not as good as the first but at least all different.
I've been doing the same thing for the past few months. I go through at least 1 box per week. I finally found a 1958 Philly (in real good condition, but damaged from the coin rolling equipment). I still need the 1938 nickels, 1939 D and S, 1950 D, and a few of hte silver nickels. I also have about 12 duplicate silver nickels already and 4 buffalo nickels. Oh and 2 proof nickels. I plan on finding the 1950D in circulation as there is a sense of self satisfaction to say that the entire collection was pulled from circulation.
I started my setS of Jeffersons during the last winter. I've made a lot of progress. I must admitt I cheated a little though. My dad gave me a roll of nickels from the 40's as payment for helping him out with a project, and those filled alot of holes.
Ok.. I am laughing now. I bought 3 rolls of nickels home. I have a Whitman folder in front of me. 1962 - 1995 and I have maybe 7 nickels in in already. I'll be darned if I didn't all but fill it from these 3 rolls! Now, i know... this is the common stuff, but it was still fun! Now, for the serious roll searchers... I got a 1960-D, a 1962-D, and a 1963, but then I saw peeking up from the pile a large S above the dome!!! Yes!!! Ok... it's not that dramatic, but still a nice find; a 43-S. I look forward to my next roll search.
Speaking of nickels, we now have a great investment now that the darn things are worth more then face value, like around 8.3 cents each if you calculate weight & metal content at recent prices for copper & nickel, thats about a 60% profit, that means the 400 rolls of the L&C buffalos i socked away from bank grabs, is roughly worth 1328.00 just in metal! reminds you of the silver deal of the 1960s, thought you'ld be interested, Steve
A great quest to undertake... I've been thinking about it as well, I enjoy my Buffalo nickels, but it sure would be nice to work on a set that is a bit more affordable. Hey and its still a nickel... hmmm... I'm almost convinced, I just wish the coin had a bit more of an artistic touch to it... Kinda like how Felix Schlag intended it in the first place.
Canadian nickels (pre-1982) are pure nickel and worth close to $0.16 each, last time I checked. Now all I need is to find someone willing to pay more than $0.10 each and I can dump a bunch of rolls.
good luck! i've only searched $60 in nickels before, but found a 1939D, and 1938. i think when i can drive, i'm going to get $20 in nickels to search through every day and do a set like your doing. a roll of nickels are worth $2.75 now! i wonder how far they will go with the prices?
I've searched a little over $1000 in nickels so far and have yet to find a 1938, 1938D, 1938S, 1939D, or 1939S. I'm sure I will find all five of those before I find my 1950D.
