1939 DDR Monticello/ONE CENT real deal

I found this in a pile of change from my husbands grandmother's house a couple of years ago. I know FOR SURE this one is a DDR, but it's not in great condition. I wanted to know what grade you guys would give it, and if I should send it to a grading company.

... Also.. I just wanted to show it off to people who might actually get excited about it !!!

It is a nice DDR, but I don't know if it would be worth submitting for grading. Have you checked, first, to see if this variety is known?

@Chris. I don't really know what you mean by checking variety. Why wouldn't it be worth submitting? Because of it's condition?

I'm not sure what to do. I would like to keep it because it's the only cool thing I have so far. I thought about submitting it just to find out grade/value and to get in encased to preserve its condition.

Silly Chris, this is DDR-001 and a red book variety. In it's current condition, which I peg to be about a Fine, it will easily sell in the $25-40 range. Not a worthwhile send to a grader for sure.

Why silly? Because I don't collect nickel varieties? I was trying to encourage @PennyPenny to perform the research.

I agree that at that value range, it would be a losing proposition to submit it for grading.

Regardless of grading or not, you might want to put it in a holder so that everyone can enjoy it without getting their paws all over it. If you have a coin shop in your area, they would have one to fit it. Welcome to CT...I've never found one like this.

 

That, my friend, is a wonderful find. I only have a few of these, and I collect Jefferson nickels. I've never found one in change, either.

I'll back up the opinion that it's not really worth submitting for monetary purposes, but honestly, I've slabbed much less valuable coins because they held a certain emotional value for me and I didn't want to accidentally misplace/sell/lose them.

Nice pickup. Keep looking - varieties are out there if you don't give up!

@stldanceartist. Thanks for your comments and thanks for looking. I may consider slabbing it just because it my first big find. You said you have a few of these, did you find them ? Wow ! Congrats to you too.

 

Nothing wrong with having something slabbed that's really special to you. Done that a few times myself. Something to remember a fun time in the hobby.

 

ANACS will certify and slab it for $10 when they have their special deals!

 

I only found one in a large group of coins I paid just over face value for because the LCS didn't want to buy them. I figured it would be a fun way to pass the time...had no idea all the varieties I'd find, not to mention the 300 or so buffalo nickels, few rolls of silver war nickels, etc. When they told the seller to take them to the bank and cash them in, I asked if it would be okay to give them something extra and save them the trip to the bank. At the least I was out $25 over face (it was about $225 worth in face value)
