Please guess the grade of the 1939-D R38 Jefferson Nickel shown below. I have attached a poll for you to cast your vote and you may select up to 3 different things: the numerical grade, FS or NOT FS, and + grade or star designation. Please don't forget to vote in the poll, and as always, comments welcome.
I didn’t do well on the last thread. I’m reminded of the old Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoons “This time for sure, Rocky!”. So I will try again. Everything on the reverse looks well struck, such as the balustrades around the roof. So I think these steps are as full as they get for this Reverse of 38 strike. I see a wee bit of orange-peel die wear on the obverse. This might increase the luster enough to bounce it up to MS66 FS. Wish me luck!
It depends if they knocked it for the planchet defect on the cheek. MS67 FS if not, MS66 FS if they did.
I went 65 no FS on this one. Gem coin but nothing standing out as over the top. Strike seems like one from worn dies. Two spots in the main field in front of face with the nick on the jaw seem to be the most distracting marks. Stairs seem well struck but think they miss FS due to the blending under column 3.
I missed the luster on the last one and think that I should go MS66 on this one. The two ticks across the steps keep it from FS.
Coin #2: 1939-D Jefferson Nickel R38 NGC MS66 They didn't like the steps on this one either, but they were consistent with the premium gem grade. @Pickin and Grinin @SensibleSal66 nailed this one.
Looks like I was too late the party here. I would have said MS65 (due to the ding on the cheek limiting the grade) so I was a grade low.
