18XX Buffalo Nickel two legged?

Hello All,

Needed some help in determining if this is a two legged Buffalo Nickel or if it's just PMD. Thank you.

Looks like PMD, you can see the all the legs in the first photo.

 

1) there were no Indian/Buffalo nickels dated in the 19th century (1800's)

2) see your other post.

 

Is there a method to make the dates appear better? I heard vinegar works but not confident enough to try.

In my opinion..
I don't know why people even bother. If you can't read the date then it's just a junk coin!

 

White vinegar with a splash of hydrogen peroxide, will make the date appear most of the time, but the coin will become a bit whiter, and it will now be etched by acid and improperly cleaned. It's sort of a Catch-22. I can't read the date, now I can read the date, it is a key date, and now the coin is ruined.

 

This type of environmental damage is nearly impossible to make look better. As was said, if you want go ahead and try but you will ruin the coin that is already ruined. You could always keep as a space filler if you can find out which date it is. I also see all four legs through this mess.

 

Ever hear the phrase " Isn't worth a plug nickel " ?

 

There's a small bottle called "Nic-A-Date" made to restore the date on nickels, as it's a soft metal. This stains the coin but then, yours is so damaged it wouldn't matter.

PS. If this was 2 legged Buffalo, he'd be laying on his side.

 

Or just plop it in some white vinegar. Leave it overnight and check it for a date in the morning.
