Yup, this was my final auction for 2016, so I was hell bent for leather!! I ended-up scoring 3 cool-enough coins ... this is the first of today's winners EGYPT, Alexandria. Hadrian. Æ Drachm AD 117-138 Dated RY 15 (AD 130/1) Diameter: 33 mm Weight: 26.84 grams Obverse: Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right Reverse: Hadrian standing left, holding scepter, greeted by Alexandria, clad in elephant skin headdress, chiton, and peplos, holding two grain ears and kissing emperor’s extended hand; [L]–IE (date) across field Reference: Köln 1035; Dattari (Savio) 7545; K&G 32.508; Emmett 964.15 Other: 12h … green-brown patina with a few patches of red Oooow, big boy ... you might just make my top ten?!!
Ummm, well here are my other Hadrian examples ... funny, because for "most" Roman rulers, I merely have one humble example ... but this guy has such great coins (just ask "Oki") that I have a few more cool additions ... HADRIAN! ... please pile-on if you have nothing better to do with your coin-time ...
Haha. Was debating on whether or not to pick up that one , but ended up picking up something else. Glad it went to you. I did get clio'd on several lots , but he paid up for it...
CLIO nailed my #1 target as well ... I was chatting with Mentor and apparently he got CLIO'd a couple of times as well (fricken Clio) => oh well, good for him!! All's fair in love & coins!! (pretty sure that's the ol' saying, eh?) Hey => I managed to score this sweet OP-dinna for $160 hammer!! ... sure, that's a bit of cash, but this cool example is "all that"
Thanks guys JA ... the other right ahahaha => you changed your post (good for you ... the "red" string goes on your "right" foot)
You probably stole that Alexandrian out from under poor TIF. She is probably at home crying and brewing some kind of nasty potion of revenge.
*edit* TIF rocks ... we usually discuss our targets ahead of time (I usually bow-out to her Princess-ness) I fricken love TIF ... she's all that in Coin-Land!! (she has AJ-skills, but she makes it look easy with a common-man's coin-budget!!) If I was starting a franchise => she would be my #1 pick!!
Love you too, SteveO As he said, Steve and I usually review our CNG picks prior to the auction. We do often have similar coins in our sites but always work things out . Well... except for that Kisthene Pigasus. I caved on that one but it was before I become comfortable with spending more than a few hundred dollars for a special coin. Had we been duking it out today I would've chased that bad little piggie much higher. I thoroughly approve of Steve's choice of this Hadrian drachm. When I saw it going cheaply I was tempted to bid too even though I already have one . I think you got that coin for a great price! It has oodles of appeal. Mine (needs a reshoot): EGYPT, Alexandria. Hadrian year 15, 130/131 AD Æ Drachm, 35 mm, 24.8 gm Obv: AVT KAI TPAI ADPIA CEB; laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind Rev: Hadrian standing left, togate, holding sceptre, greeted by Alexandria, clad in elephant's skin headdress, chiton, and peplos, holding two grain ears in her left hand, and kissing Hadrian's extended right hand; L-IE (date) below. Ref: Emmett 964.15, R1
You're closing out 2016 in a blaze of glory, Steve. Love the reverse type, and the coin's got that eye appeal going doesn't it! As usual, TIF's example is not bad either . I've got a Hadrian drachm with Alexandria too, but here she's merely in a "Hey dude, how's it going" pose.
OK, that is good because wars and quests have started over smaller things. You don't want to have flying dolphin man dropping tuna on your head when you least expect it.
Oki ... ummm, are you mad at me? (I figured that you'd comment one way or another on this baby?) ... I saw that you commented on my other coin (are you pissed at me for wandering into your coin-plaza?) ... dude, you'll always be the Lord of Hadrian, my cool coin-friend
