Love the giant hunks of copper in these. I just added this one to the UNO thread, but it fits here too:
Yes they're big and hefty. One seller always mentions that the Russians melted cannon for some of the 5 Kopeks. Maybe someone can elaborate, I couldn't find verification for that, but suppose it's very possible.
It did happen, but for coins for Moldavia-Wallachia in 1772-3: Para 3 Dengi, a Para or 3 half kopeks from Moldavia. Bell metal was also used.
BTW this is another "not my coin" that is actually my daughter's. She somehow has some mysterious gift for finding something with meaning to it, she picked this out of Alex Basok's $10 box when she was about 10-11 years old, he then let her have it for $5. I asked her why she wanted it, and she had no idea. Well she came into this world only a few kilometres from where the coin was minted.
I love old Russian / U.S.S.R./ Soviet Union coins. They were majestic and bold. This is the latest Russian coin I got. It's not silver; but it represented the tremendous national pride and unity off the Russian Motherland. Enjoy.
All of a coins from "2007" set are in circulation until now. But 1 kopek is not in circulation in fact (1 USA cent = 58 kopeks). But I remember USSR when 1 USA dollar was equal to 56 Soviet kopeks...
