I said it would be a good Thursday night football game. It was. In fact, it was outstanding, including the last moment win.
It could just be ANACS adhering to a 100% pure Technical Grading approach and having zero-tolerance for any wear/rub/friction on the coin's high points. No net-grading. Hence the big jumps from PCGS or NGC.
I believe you are correct. It's disappointing sometimes when a coin has brilliant luster but has a few flaws. Many times a high AU coin is more eye pleasing than a low grade MS.
ANACS vf NGC AU (duh) It's an AU details coin. As I said, I've seen this before and made out pretty well cracking ANACS coins and submitting them raw to NGC. Years ago cracked a gold CC$5 coin that ANACS had as xf45 - came back from NGC as AU58.
I am not surprised at all at this. And yet, ANACs slabs don't get the same respect. It is depressing, because I like ANACS pricing and no need for an annual membership. I think ANACS needs to step up their game with a more attractive holder, even if it's a throwback to their old soapbox slabs.
In my experience, IGC grading wins the prize for worst ever grading. Like ANACS, I've had good luck cracking IGC coins and getting better grades - justifiably so - from NGC (I don't have a PCGS membership but I have been tempted). I would definitely consider sending coins to CACG, crackouts from the worst ones or otherwise. I do have a CAC membership and have that for quite a while - ever since local coin shops screwed up my CAC submissions and even damaged some holders and had the nerve to blame the damage on CAC. I've submitted to CAC and they send holders back in very safe boxes with individual slots for the holders. They didn't damage my holders, the coin dealer did. Best to do it yourself, regardless of where you send them.
If they ran a special with a modernized version of the Soapbox I would probably send quite a few coins in. PS, I have never had the need to send anything to get graded. There are a few that I would like to have slabbed though.
I like mine bulletproofed and able to store in a slotted, organized plastic box. I'm not an album fan. My memories of cheesy Whitman albums are not fond ones. Grading gives outside observers a sense of credibilty too. I won't be around forever, my heirs are not collectors.
I have Danscos, Whittman, Littleton, Waite Raymonds, Library of coins. If I moved I wouldn't feel comfortable using album. I would probably go to intercept shield slabs.
I'm with Barney. 100% I have not submitted anything to ANAC since they went distracting yellow. James
Why on earth did they pick that color? Why not gold? I wonder if they change, they'll reholder them at no charge?
I’m a little disappointed in NGC. Just got back a submission and one of the coins went through NCS. I had them “conserve” a gold coin before and I thought they made it too shiny. This was a trade dollar and it doesn’t look like they did anything to it and then detailed it for cleaning. With nothing to lose, I feel like cracking it and dipping it myself. Also recently got a coin back from PCGS, 1 coin and it comes in a plastic PCGS box. Had 9 coins come back from NGC and they used a cardboard box with dividers.
I think the whole point of this part is to prevent damage in shipping. I can't say that's a bad thing.
I agree that I like how PCGS sends your coins back in plastic slab boxes. Only TPG to do that, to my knowledge.
Plastic slab boxes are great for storage, but I think the thick cardboard boxes might be more shock absorbent and an advantage in preventing shipping damage. Thin plastic might not be so forgiving.
