I don't consider it tragic. If the coins are culls, use them for something else. Be it restrikes or smelt them and make something else out of them. We can't keep everything

When I acquire a batch of Morgan dollars for potential over-striking, I save any scarcer dates, any varieties of interest, and even common coins that are nice XF-AU grade.

    I especially like to over-strike common-date cleaned/polished coins.

How does one acquire Morgan dollars in batches? I never heard of such a thing.

Dealers do it all the time. Dealer to dealer bulk sales at shows, guys who brings in a big lot of Morgans, dealers who know what you are looking for and call you when they get a big batch etc etc. There are many ways. Heck, there is also a seizure company on auction zip that auctions them off in 20, 50, 100 & 200 piece lots.

Oh, I see. I just collect them, thus never really paid attention to that. Why do you think he refuses to initial them? An initial would be tantamount to a "fingerprint," saying "come and get me." Then again, it may detract some from the fantasy he's selling you. I guess it's one of those, huh?

Not at all. He "initialed" his 2009 "Proofed" ASE because it called for it as the date was struck in bullion finish and one could theoretically put it in ones pocket for a few months and it could then be confused with an actual government issue, however ludicrous that senario would be, but still. And that is one of his more expensive overstrikes today. The date and quality is his signature. Nothing more is needed unless it is called for in special circumstance such as the above mentioned.

Any of you ever resell any of these? Is there a secondary market for that?

There she is. Much better than an old cull Morgan.

Yes, there is. You can't touch a Dan Carr 64-D Peace dollar for less than about $400 right now (and that would be a very good deal).

I thought so. Do you know when he stopped minting those and what the final count is or doesn't he share that information with the public?

Dan is an open book. Literally. He goes above and beyond in terms of transparency. If you'd like info on the 64d peace dollar or any other overstrike or original piece he's ever done, released or not, here is the page. Click on "Fantasy Overstrikes" for the peace dollar info...
