Appreciate it Tif! Its been a pretty unbelievable year. I'm sure next year will be at least good but I don't think I will top this year for a while.
Great top 5, I forgot that you picked up double gold this year! My favorite is for sure the Visgoth gold....I mean how cool is that? Visgoth gold! Awesome.
Yeah, by this point in time the Visigoths weren't into the whole raiding and migrating thing anymore so they had more time to make these awesome gold coins
Great Fab Five! You collect gold like the US swim team, or the Canadian curling team. I enjoy reading the historic settings for your coins. My favorite late Roman history book is - The Ruin of the Roman Empire. .
FYI in the paragraph about my Athalaric decanummium, by mistake I mixed up the words "latter" and "former". Should basically say the barbarians (Ostrogoths) came to rule the Romans, not the other way around (although technically this did end up happening when the Byzantines later reconquered Italy, but that's beside the point ).
Glad you and others have enjoyed my write-ups! I'll have to make a note of checking out that book sometime. I have a few books myself on the era and occasionally take time to look for more. One recent one I've highly enjoyed in particular is "History of the Later Roman Empire" by J.B. Bury. It comes in two volumes, of which I have just the second so far (tried searching for a really cheap copy of the first volume but had no luck; I might end up going for the $10 one B&N has).
