On Tuesday I went to my "local" coin shop (which is actually 25 miles away) which I do every few months. I usually just look through the 25 cent each world coins, but they didn't have a lot this time so I also looked at their big box of foreign silver. They had a lot of really nice stuff this time, way more than the last time I looked through it. I had a big pile of coins I was interested in, but as the owner priced it for me I had to keep putting many of them back because it was adding up too quickly and I only had $200 with me. I kind of want to go back and get more, but there's a reason I only take so much money with me and I'll be good. I just hope they still have those coins next time I go. Here are some of my favorites that I picked up. This first group is big Mexican coins.
Here are some neat Portuguese and Austrian commemoratives, with a big South African 5 shilling and a nicely toned Canadian 50 cent piece.
This last group has a Slovakian 50 korun from World War II when it was a Nazi puppet state, an older Iranian silver and two very old copper Nova Scotia penny and half pennies.
Those are some great buys. I like the look of the escudos and the SA 5 shilling. Plus, the big Mexican coins are always fun.
For a long time I was constantly shopping for coins on eBay. Now I have totally lost interest in that and I feel like I'm only interested in buying at coin shops. You never know what you'll find.
My local shop only has foriegn coins loose in a wooden box. I can find a few good one, no silver though. And he goes south for 6 months in winter.
Agreed. I have many Canadian pre-confederation tokens but these are some of the nicest ones I've found.
That's why I drive to this one. There are other shops closer but this one has the best selection. And they all know me there so it's kind of like "Cheers."
It's a total crapshoot. I've found some great coins in their value bins, but sometimes it's the same old stuff. Last time I did this with the silver bin the owner wasn't there and the employee who priced them looked them all up in Krause and mostly charged me around melt, which was great. This time the owner priced them and did it just by looking at them and saying a price, and I felt like it cost me a lot more that way. It's his store so he can do it however he wants, but I hope next time I go he's not there and I can get them for around melt again.
Something else you might appreciate is I got about 8-10 Australian pennies from the teens and 20s for 50 cents each. I'm going to see if any are upgrades to my current collection and resell the rest.
