I found this nickel roll hunting a couple of months ago, and I am wondering if it is a proof of not. I take pictures with my camera phone so it will be tough to tell definitively, but in hand the coin has mirror like surfaces and is very well struck, with well detailed steps. There is some wear on the high points of the obv, so if it is proof it is impaired... First set of pictures are with flash, second set without What do you think, proof or not?
Tuff call for me, st least based on the photos. It's got those sharp rims and a nice strike, but I can't tell if it's just a well-struck business strike or a slightly impaired proof.
If only I had a nice set up for pictures... If it is a business strike it's certainly the best of that year I've seen. 64s are a dime a dozen, but this one significantly stood out from the rest to me. Unfortunately, I have no tell tale S to go by
I say yes.... as if you ever gone through a roll of 64 ' s you be lucky to see steps . The 64 was probably the most minted nickel ever. Those dies got a real work out. And by chance I'm wrong well a 64 with steps even with the mintage's well worth keeping ya won't see many.
I'm not sure if I've ever owned a 1964 (P or D) Jefferson Nickel with decent steps. I'd say 99% that's a proof (when combined with the mirror-like surfaces you say it has.)
Thanks for the input everyone, it's not worth much, nevertheless it's pretty cool to find a proof in the wild.
My gut says proof on this one. The rim has that square look to it that you get with proofs and the strike quality is almost "too good" for a 1964 business strike. So, I'm going with proof.
