Is this a normal occurance? I was looking through my wheats and saw this. normal coin Coin in Question not much of a difference but still interesting
At one time the mint used to put the mintmark in by hand into the die , so at times this will happen to any coin no real value. I think they stoped this in 1968 however I could be wrong on the year. Bruce.
Yes, and until pretty recently they used to punch the mintmark by hand onto each new working die. It only took a second to do really and the die could last for several hundred thousand strikes before being retired. Of course now the mintmark is part of the master die so there is no change within a year unless the master die is changed out.
Mint marks were struck into the die by hand into the late 80's I believe., Sometimes the strike was too weak and had to be struck or "punched" again. These are calle repunched mint marks or RPM's. these Rpm's have been defined and cataluoged on this website ... WWW.Coppercoins.com Ziggy
Pretty sure it was a misunderstanding. I think when you said that they punched the mint mark by hand he thought you meant they punched the coins themselves instead of the dies.
