I've been collecting coins for year! This form is great because I can ask of the group what they think. Are any of these Morgan's or Peace Dollars worth grading? Thank you!
There might be something im not seeing like a VAM so keep looking here for other responses. Sent from my SM-G935P using Tapatalk
Thank you! I just like collecting and at least here I can ask without feeling stupid. I took a couple of my coins to a local coin dealer and he acted like I was a pain in the butt! But he wanted to purchase the Morgan's and Peace Dollars and Mercury Dimes. He said he would give me $20 bucks for each Dollar. I told him they only way I would ever sell is if I know someone who purchased them appreciate having them not just making a profit. He was not happy....Oh well!
No, no, no, no and no. Keep them as they are and enjoy the tactile experience of handling raw coins, so many of us have forgotten, in these modern times.
It's not a stupid question. We all started this hobby as newbies and it's nice to see new people joining the hobby. In general, I'd only recommend sending in coins for grading if they're worth $100-200, and then only if you're looking to sell them in the near future. These are all circulated common-date coins and aren't worth much more than the dealer offered you (maybe a bit more). By the time you pay for postage both ways, the submission fees, grading fees, and have them out of your possession for a month or two (or more), it's hard to see the benefit to you. If these are the type of coins you generally collect, don't worry so much about the grading game and just have fun buying and enjoying them. If you eventually want to own coins with a significant numismatic premium, stick to buying coins already in TPG slabs, at least until you gain enough experience to be ahead of the game. There are lots of folks willing to take advantage of newbies.
Thank you so much. My brother and I have collected coins since we were kids. I just recently started organizing what I have. This forum is great!!! You are so right people will try to take advantage. I most likely will never sell the coins I have. I just think they are cool! Especially when you have something dating back over 100 years. Every time my husband finds a Wheat penny and give it to me you would think I won the lottery. It's just the little things in life.
You remind me of myself back in 1964. Back then, you could pull a lot of interesting stuff out of the pocket change......Walkers, Standing Liberty's, Franklin's, 1930's Washington quarters.
